"SISYPHEAN CIRCLE - COVID" 4-2020, riverstone/bronze, 8"h 16"w x6"d (20 x40 x15cm)
private collection Sis·y·phus ![]()
Pronunciation: 'si-s&-f&s
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin, from Greek Sisyphos
: a legendary king of Corinth condemned eternally to repeat
the cycle of rolling a heavy rock up a hill in Hades only to have it roll
down again as it nears the top
|
Created during the height of the Covid pandemic, this sculpture reimagines the myth of Sisyphus as a collective struggle. Long central to Van Alstine's oeuvre, the Sisyphean task here reflects the exhausting effort required to confront a global crisis amid widespread denial of fact and expertise. |
