"SISYPHEAN CIRCLE - COVID" 4-2020, riverstone/bronze, 8"h 16"w x6"d (20 x40 x15cm)

private collection

Sis·y·phus
Pronunciation: 'si-s&-f&s
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin, from Greek Sisyphos
: a legendary king of Corinth condemned eternally to repeat the cycle of rolling a heavy rock up a hill in Hades only to have it roll down again as it nears the top

Created during the height of the Covid pandemic, this sculpture reimagines the myth of Sisyphus as a collective struggle. Long central to Van Alstine's oeuvre, the Sisyphean task here reflects the exhausting effort required to confront a global crisis amid widespread denial of fact and expertise.
