February 1987. Painted granite, painted steel. Dimensions: 4.5 × 6 × 4 in (11 × 15 × 10 cm). Collection of the artist.
Blue Loop/Fools Gold extends my exploration of the circle as a device for joining stone and steel through balance, tension, and implied movement. A large loop of painted steel rises between two granite forms, visually lifting and connecting their considerable mass. The blue steel and altered stone surface reflect my increasing use of color during this period and my move away from a strict adherence to “truth to materials.”
The second part of the title, Fools Gold, introduces an element of visual trickery. By covering the natural granite with gold paint, I deliberately disguise the material and question what the viewer thinks they are seeing—suggesting that things are not always what they appear to be.
