April 1988. Pink granite, painted steel. Dimensions: 67 × 40 × 24 in (170 × 102 × 61 cm). Private Collection Washington, DC.
Blue Moon Passage brings together several themes emerging in my work during the late 1980s—the vessel, passage, and celestial imagery. The circle and crescent establish a lunar presence, while the granite and vessel-like steel form contrast earthbound mass with movement through space.
The title links the celestial Blue Moon with Passage, suggesting a journey or transition. The vessel becomes a metaphor for the self navigating through space and change, anticipating my later Portals and Passages works.
