February 1987. Granite, painted steel. Dimensions: 16 × 17 × 7 in (41 × 43 × 18 cm).

Blue Rounder II, 1987

Blue Rounder II continues my exploration of the Rounder Series, bringing two pieces of granite into a dynamic relationship through a large circular steel arc. The stones appear precariously balanced while the circle visually and physically connects them. Visible pins and attachments continue my interest in revealing how the sculpture is assembled, while the circle introduces a sense of movement and arrested motion.

The blue-painted steel marks my growing interest during this period in using color to move beyond the natural character of the materials. Here, the blue unifies the structural elements and gives the circular form a stronger graphic presence against the rough granite. Blue Rounder II reflects the continuing evolution of the Rounder Series toward a more expressive use of circle, stone, balance, and movement.
