October 1995. Granite, bronze, steel. Dimensions: 9 × 17 × 5 in (23 × 43 × 13 cm).

Private collection - Baltimore, MD

Branches, 1995

Branches brings together granite with actual tools and found implements, reflecting my longstanding interest in tools as extensions of the human hand. Removed from their original functions, these familiar forms become sculptural elements that connect human ingenuity and labor with the natural world.

The sweeping antler form, sphere, granite, and curved steel create an animated horizontal movement. Their unlikely combination brings together natural and human-made forms, transforming familiar objects into a balance of gesture, movement, and metaphor.
