Broad Reach I initiated a series inspired by my sailing experiences in the Adirondacks. The title comes from the sailing term broad reach—a point of sail when the wind comes from behind the beam and the sails are eased outward; a large spinnaker can be flown to catch the following wind. Bluewater Bound In the sculpture, the sweeping curved steel and elevated beam suggest the billowing sail, forward movement, and release of sailing with the wind.
For me, the Broad Reach Series also carries a broader metaphorical meaning. After the hard work of tacking back and forth, a broad reach suggests a moment when one can ease the sails, lean back, and let the wind carry you—a time to savor the fruits of one’s labor. This nautical imagery became a continuing theme in the series, later appearing in works such as Broadreach III (Red Billow).
