June 1996. Bronze, granite. Dimensions: 25 × 11 × 14 in (64 × 28 × 36 cm). Private collection.
Ceryneian Skate draws on the Greek myth of the Ceryneian Hind, the extraordinary female deer sacred to Artemis. Although female, the Hind was described as having stag-like golden antlers and bronze hooves, and possessing such supernatural speed that it could outrun a flying arrow. Capturing the animal alive became one of the Twelve Labors of Hercules. The cast antler form rising through the sculpture recalls this mythical creature while giving the work an animated, almost airborne presence.
The title Skate introduces another layer of movement. The elongated bronze form at the base suggests both the Hind’s bronze hoof and a skate or runner, transforming the weight of bronze and granite into an image of speed, balance, and forward motion. The sculpture brings together two recurring interests in my work—mythology as a framework for contemporary metaphor and the challenge of making inherently heavy materials appear light, agile, and in motion.
