September 2018. Granite, aluminum, bronze. Dimensions: 123 x 46 x 24 in (312 x 117 x 61 cm).

Private Collection Texas

Chalice VI continues my Chalice Series and my longstanding interest in vessels and containers as sculptural forms and metaphors. Rooted partly in my early background as a potter, the vessel aluminum aeronautical form balances point-to-point with a rough granite mass, creating an elongated chalice.

The sanded aluminum cup reflects the light and colors around it, subtly changing with its environment. Its luminous surface contrasts with the weight and permanence of the rough granite, bringing together lightness and mass, the human-made and the natural. Through its precarious balance, the familiar vessel becomes a spirited “cup of life,” suggesting passage and the human experience.
