August 2002. Bronze, granite. Dimensions: 12’ × 5’ × 5’.
Dedicated March 22, 2003 to Charles L Reed, FBI Agent killed in the line of duty March 22, 1996, Reed Memorial Park, Harleysville, PA.
The Reed Memorial was Van Alstine’s first of three memorial projects and an extension of his Calendar series, with the first completed in 1986. Using the concept of marking the sun’s position with a metal "stylus" that records the placement of its shadow on a specific day and time, the Charles Reed Memorial commemorates the death of undercover FBI agent Charles Reed, who was killed in the line of duty on March 22, 1996, in Philadelphia. The sculpture was dedicated on the same date seven years later, in 2003, in Reed’s hometown of Harleysville, PA.
