October 1995. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 9 × 11 × 3 in (23 × 28 × 8 cm).
Private collection.
Charting the Course II, the second work in the series, continues my interest in tools and instruments as extensions of the human hand. A real set of calipers, manipulated and incorporated into the sculpture, combines with granite and forged steel, transforming a functional measuring tool into an expressive form.
The title suggests navigation, choice, and determining direction. The calipers and sweeping steel element evoke measuring and plotting a course, becoming a metaphor for choosing a path forward.
