Private Collection - Philadelphia, PA

Strange Fruit (Ara), 1999

Strange Fruit (Ara) explores the column as a vertical, almost figure-like structure. At its summit, a fruit-like bronze form contrasts with the architectural shaft, while a small anvil seemingly balanced on a stone cylinder brings together recurring interests in tools, weight, and precarious balance.

The anvil—a place where material is literally forged—also serves as a metaphor for creative transformation. Ara, Latin for “altar,” reinforces the work’s ritualistic quality, while elevating this quintessentially heavy object creates an unexpected sense of lightness and suspension.
