Complications from a Fall II (2007)

Complications from a Fall II is a more narrative and autobiographical work than most of my sculptures, inspired by an unfortunate experience involving a good friend. After a long hiatus from skiing, he purchased an array of expensive equipment, only to fall before taking his first run. He was evacuated by medical helicopter and never skied again. Ironically, he had been with me when I found several of the objects incorporated into this sculpture.

The swirling, precariously balanced elements suggest a chaotic moment of arrested motion, with the curved steel, spiraling forms, and heavy objects implying a sudden loss of control. While rooted in a personal experience, the sculpture speaks more broadly to the familiar phrase “complications from a fall” and the unexpected consequences of a single misstep—particularly relevant to those of us living in northern climates.
