February 2003. Bronze, granite. Dimensions: 11 × 18 × 5 in (28 × 46 × 13 cm). Private collection.

Cudgel ’03 continues my long-running Cudgel Series and my interest in tools and implements as expressive sculptural forms—extensions of the hand associated with physical action, strength, and force. The sweeping bronze horn functions as a handle, while the rough granite becomes the head of a primitive tool or club.

The cast horn continues my interest in the natural, spiraling geometry of organic forms and the associations they bring to the work. The bronze was reused from Cudgel Arch (2000) after its original rounded stone broke; replacing it with this sharper green granite shifts the sculpture from the club-like character of the earlier work toward something more suggestive of a blade.
