June 2012. River stone, bronze. Dimensions: 10 × 17 × 4 in (25 × 43 × 10 cm). Private Collection.
Cudgel 2012 is part of my ongoing Cudgel Series and continues my interest in tools and implements as expressive sculptural forms. The sweeping bronze suggests a handle, while the rounded granite becomes the heavy head of a primitive tool or club.
The cast bronze horn reflects my interest in the natural spiraling geometry of organic forms and reinforces the primitive character of the imagined implement. Unlike the sharper stones in earlier Cudgel works, which suggest a blade, the rounded stone gives this sculpture a more distinctly club-like presence.
