August 1992. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 14 × 15 × 4 in (36 × 38 × 10 cm). Private collection.
Cudgel III is an early work in my Cudgel Series and reflects my interest in tools and implements as expressive sculptural forms. Here the sweeping curved steel suggests a handle, while the rough granite assumes the weight and presence of the head of a primitive hand tool or weapon—a cudgel.
Rather than depicting a specific tool, the sculpture uses the familiar relationship of handle and head to suggest physical action and human presence. The combination of stone and steel allows the work to shift between tool and abstract form.
