December 1984. Granite, steel. (painted in 1987). Dimensions: 8 × 6 × 4.5 ft.
D.T.’s I (Diagonal Tendencies) is the first in a series that would eventually include six additional works. It continues my fundamental concern with physically combining stone and steel, while reflecting the more expressive vocabulary emerging in my work at the time. The title has a dual meaning: “Diagonal Tendencies” refers to the prominent diagonal drilling channels left by the quarrying process, whose concentrated rhythm becomes an active visual element.
The initials “D.T.’s” also refer to delirium tremens, a condition associated with severe trembling—echoed in the visual vibration of the stone’s repeated diagonals and introducing a darker psychological dimension. The sculpture was shown at Osuna Gallery in Washington, D.C., in my 1985 solo exhibition. In 1987, both stone and steel were painted, and the work went to Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, where it remained for several years. It eventually returned to me and, as of 2026, remains in Wells, New York.
