September 1991. Granite, steel, glass. Dimensions: 36 × 80 × 40 in (91 × 203 × 102 cm).
Flug Foyer Table was commissioned by Debby and Marty Flug for their home on Red Mountain in Aspen, Colorado, and is shown here at the foot of their grand staircase. The work continues my interest in combining found stone with industrial found steel, allowing the inherent character and history of the materials to remain visible.
A heavy glass tabletop is dramatically cantilevered beyond the granite, with the massive stone acting as a counterweight to create a sense of balance and suspension. A year later, I designed and installed the granite and steel railings and newel posts for the staircase, extending the sculptural vocabulary of the table into the surrounding architecture.
