September 1991. Granite, bronze. Dimensions: 51 × 27 × 14 in (130 × 69 × 36 cm).

Hermes, 1991

Hermes continues my interest in exploring the figure and mythology as frameworks for sculptural expression. Rather than depicting the figure literally, the relationship of granite and bronze suggests bodily presence, movement, and balance. The curved bronze element acts like a joint, giving the heavy granite an unexpected sense of animation and lift.

The title refers to Hermes, the swift messenger god of Greek mythology. The upper stone takes on the shape of a wing, alluding to his winged helmet. This mythological reference transforms the sculpture into an abstract figure seemingly poised for movement or flight.
