October 1984. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 24 × 50 × 12 in (61 × 127 × 30 cm). Cannibalized

Holding Pattern, 1984

Holding Pattern reflects my move away from the strictly structural concerns of my earlier work toward a more expressive use of stone and steel. Two granite forms are held in tension by a jagged steel element and forged bars. Gravity, balance, and visible assembly remain central, while the steel becomes increasingly gestural and image-driven.

The title plays on the sculpture’s physical and psychological character: the elements are literally held in a precarious arrangement, while “holding pattern” suggests waiting or circling without moving forward—a state of suspended or arrested motion.
