June 2006. Slate, steel. Dimensions: 51 × 22 × 15 in (130 × 56 × 38 cm). Private Collection - St. Louis, MO

Hula IV, 2006, is from long-running series exploring my interest in the expressive movement of the human body. Like works inspired by dance, gymnastics, and fencing, it uses balance, gesture, and implied motion rather than literal figuration. The circular steel element and sweeping base suggest the rhythmic rotation associated with the hula hoop, while the vertical slate gives the composition a bodily presence.

The work reflects my broader interest in “choreographing” heavy, earthbound materials—using steel to lift and animate stone. JOHN VAN ALSTINE SCULPTURE Here the massive slate appears almost weightless, poised above the circular steel form in a moment of arrested motion, transforming physical weight into a sense of balance, rhythm, and movement
