Implement 25 – River Arc, 1995

Implement 25 – River Arc continues my exploration of tools and implements as extensions of the human hand. Here the sweeping form suggests a tiller, with its dual associations—an agricultural implement for working the land and a marine device for steering and navigating. This ambiguity connects labor and landscape with ideas of direction, movement, and journey that recur throughout my work.

The sculpture also turns the tables on my usual relationship between materials: the dramatic arc, typically assigned to steel in my work, is instead embodied by stone. The stone is an actual gristmill stone pulled from the Sacandaga River, which runs through my studio property, giving the work a direct physical connection to the site and its industrial past.
