January 1991. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 44 × 65 × 42 in (112 × 165 × 107 cm). Parts used in other sculptures.
J-Bar continues my interest in tools and implements as extensions of the hand and as expressive sculptural forms. The long diagonal steel bar suggests a lever or pry bar, while the granite wedge introduces weight and resistance, bringing natural and industrial materials into an active relationship.
The title refers to the hooked, J-shaped steel element. Together, the hook, bar, and stone suggest an ambiguous tool, using leverage, weight, and force to imply human action.
