JC Rounder, 1985

JC Rounder continues my exploration of the circle as a way of introducing movement and implied rotation into the physical weight of stone. A broad steel arc bridges two contrasting pieces of granite, while the forged-steel bars visibly clasp and support the stones. Rather than concealing the connections, I make the means of assembly an active part of the image—a continuation of my interest in gravity, balance, and the physical dialogue between natural stone and industrial steel. These concerns remain central throughout my work.

The initials “JC” refer simply to my Jersey City studio, where the sculpture was created, distinguishing it from the other works in the expanding Rounder Series. I lived and worked in Jersey City during this period, and the studio became an important setting for developing the increasingly circular, gestural vocabulary of my mid-1980s sculpture.
