Leg Lift, 1985

Leg Lift reflects the increasingly frequent figurative references entering my work during this period. The extended steel element running along the floor acts somewhat like a foot or leg lifting one end of the stone. Rather than depicting the figure literally, I use weight, balance, and the contrasting character of stone and steel to evoke bodily movement—an interest that would become increasingly important in later work.

Both the granite and steel are painted, marking another shift in my work of the mid-1980s. Color allowed me to move beyond the largely monochromatic gray granite and raw steel I had used for years, adding another expressive element while loosening my earlier allegiance to the natural appearance of materials. Combined with the title Leg Lift, the painted surfaces reinforce the sculpture’s playful sense of gesture and movement.
