August 1991. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 74 × 48 × 30 in (188 × 122 × 76 cm). Collection Purdue University, West Layfette, IN installed 2017.
Link II continues my interest in combining rough, found stone with industrial metal, using the steel to physically and visually unite otherwise separate elements. The central connector was salvaged from a marine salvage yard near my Jersey City studio, part of an industrial waterfront landscape that became an important source of materials and imagery in my work.
The steel element is a pelican clip, named for the beak-like form of its clasp and originally used to connect large sections of marine chain. Its former function gives the sculpture an additional layer of meaning: an object whose previous “life” was literally about connecting and linking becomes the physical and conceptual link holding the sculpture together.
The piece was displayed in Palm Dessert, CA, 2001-04; later at the Gerald Peters Gallery, Santa Fe; returned to Wells in 2013 and finally sold to Purdue University in 2017.
