Longhandle (Echo I), 1995

Longhandle (Echo I) grows out of my longstanding interest in tools and implements as extensions of the human hand. Its elongated form suggests an oversized hand tool—somewhere between an axe and an adze. Here even the rough, stone-like form is cast in bronze, creating a visual contradiction between natural form and human-made material.

I created three versions of Longhandle, exploring variations in material and orientation while retaining the same basic tool-like image. The sweeping handle suggests leverage and action, while the elevated “stone” introduces weight and balance. Transformed from a familiar tool into an ambiguous sculptural form, the work evokes labor, ingenuity, and our impulse to shape the natural world.
