Low Stone Cudgel, 2003

Low Stone Cudgel is part of my ongoing Cudgel Series and continues my interest in tools and implements as expressive sculptural forms—extensions of the hand associated with physical action, strength, and force. Here the sweeping bronze form suggests a handle, while the granite becomes the head or blade of a primitive hand tool or cudgel.

The cast bronze horn extends the handle and reinforces the primitive, organic character of the imagined tool. Its natural curvature also reflects my interest in horns as an expansion of the arc forms that have long appeared in my work. The title refers directly to the relatively low position of the stone, suspended horizontally beside the bronze handle.
