October 1989. Granite, bronze. Dimensions: 88 × 35 × 12 in (224 × 89 × 30 cm). Private Collection; Lewisberry, PA.
Mohawk continues my long-standing interest in combining rough-hewn granite with metal. A curved bronze element joins and appears to balance two massive pieces of stone, countering their weight with a sense of lift and precarious movement. The bronze also introduces color and surface through its green patina.
Like several works from this period, Mohawk introduces a figurative reference. The dramatically tilted upper stone suggests the raised profile of a traditional Mohawk hairstyle, giving the abstract sculpture a subtle human presence. Rather than depicting the figure literally, the reference adds another layer of association while maintaining my central concerns with material, balance, and assemblage.
