March 1987. Painted granite, painted steel. Dimensions: 53 × 27 × 8 in (135 × 69 × 20 cm). Private collection - New York
Naltar comes from a period when I was experimenting more freely with color on both steel and stone. Influenced in part by my pastel drawings, I moved away from the predominantly gray granite and steel of my earlier work toward painted, more expressive surfaces. Here, as in several works from this period, stone plays a reduced role, serving primarily as a base and counterpoint to the more animated painted-steel structure.
The title comes from the extraordinary green and blue glacial lakes of Pakistan’s Naltar Valley, which I visited in 1986 while traveling through Pakistan and western China. The lakes are noted for their striking variations of green, blue, and azure, colors echoed in the painted surfaces of the sculpture.
The first Bashkiri Lake is located at a distance of 12 kilometers (8 mi) from Upper Naltar (or the Naltar Bala).
