Passage ’89, 1989

Passage ’89 continues my exploration of the vessel as an expressive metaphor for passage, journey, and the self. My attraction to the vessel grew from both the beauty and functionality of boat forms and their long history as carriers through physical and metaphorical space. Here, a vessel is caught in mid-descent, its strong diagonal movement contrasting with the weight and permanence of the upright stone.

The vessel appears poised between departure and arrival—its passage still underway and its destination unknown. This sense of a journey suspended in progress became increasingly important in my work during this period, allowing the vessel to suggest movement through changing places, circumstances, and states of being.
