October 1990. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 62 × 101 × 62 in (157 × 257 × 157 cm).

Platte, 1990

Platte developed as a spin-off from my earlier Rounder and Go-Round Series, continuing their exploration of circular forms, balance, and the relationship between stone and metal. Broad slabs of rough granite are joined with curved and linear steel, allowing their natural shape, mass, and weight to remain central to the sculpture.

The title Platte refers to the flat, plate-like character of the granite stones. Their broad planes contrast with the curving steel, which lifts and positions the stone in ways that challenge its normally earthbound nature, transforming weight and gravity into balance and movement.
