The Prop Series is closely related to the earlier Arch Series and evolved from my tensegrity, or Brute Series, in which gravity and the pressure of massive stones provide the energy—or “glue”—that holds the sculpture together without welding. Weight becomes an active structural force as stone and steel interact through tension, compression, and balance.
The title Prop is purposely both noun and verb, emphasizing the sculpture as both object and action. Like the Arch Series, these works explore how opposing forces—weight and lift, mass and movement, tension and stability—can be brought into a precarious but resolved equilibrium.
The steel elements were rebuild by the artist in 2016 at his Wells, NY studio when it was acquired by the Delaware Museum.
