Quarry Totem continues my Totem Series, combining the vertical presence of a rough-hewn granite monolith with fabricated steel elements that clasp, support, and elevate the stone. The work brings together the natural character of the granite with the more deliberate, industrial geometry of the steel.
The granite was sourced from an abandoned quarry on Vinalhaven Island off the coast of Maine. Its weathered surface and irregular profile retain evidence of its quarry history, while the steel transforms the massive stone into a strong, upright totemic presence.
