1998. Pink granite, steel. Dimensions: 36 × 20 × 8 in (91 × 51 × 20 cm). Corporate collection.

Quill, 1998

Quill continues my interest in combining rough-hewn stone with fabricated metal while challenging the inherent weight and earthbound character of stone. The pink granite is lifted and poised above the steel and bronze structure, creating a precarious balance that gives the heavy material an unexpected sense of movement and levity—part of my ongoing effort to “choreograph” stone and make it appear to defy gravity.

The title Quill suggests a feather, reinforced by the elongated shape and quarry marks of the granite. This association transforms the dense stone visually into something light and airborne, emphasizing a recurring contradiction in my work: using weight, gravity, and balance to create the illusion of their opposite.
