January 1991. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 12 x 101/2 x9 in. Private Collection.
Razorback follows in the line of my earlier Rounder and Pique à Terre works, continuing their circular vocabulary and my interest in combining rough, found stone with metal. The sweeping steel arc brings the granite elements into a dynamic relationship of weight, balance, and movement.
The title comes directly from the larger stone, whose sharp edge runs down its “back” or spine like a raised razor. As often happens in my work, the particular character of a found stone helps determine both the final composition and the title.
