April 1984. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 8.5 × 7 × 3.5 ft. Private collection - Los Angeles.

Rockbottom, 1984

Rockbottom reflects my movement away from the tightly structured concerns of my earlier work toward a more associative and expressive vocabulary. Granite and salvaged steel remain joined through gravity, balance, and visible assembly, while the title carries a double meaning: literally, the rock forms the bottom of the sculpture; figuratively, it refers to the familiar expression of “hitting rock bottom.” The work was later traded to Resources Exchange, a California “barter bank,” and installed in the garden of a Los Angeles hotel.
