January 1991. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 19 × 43 × 15 in (48 × 109 × 38 cm). Disassembled and parts used in new pieces.

Rocker, 1991

Rocker is the first in a series that continues my interest in combining rough, found stone with steel and using balance and gravity to animate heavy materials. The granite is poised against an elongated steel arc, creating a sense of suspended movement—part of my continuing effort to “choreograph” traditionally earthbound stone.

The title comes directly from the rocking gesture of the elongated steel arc. Acting almost like a rocker or seesaw, it transforms the weight of the granite into a composition that appears capable of shifting and moving while remaining held in balance.
