Van Alstine solos exhibit Diane Brown Gallery, 100 Green Street, NYC 1984
April 1984. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 10 × 4 × 4 in (25 × 10 × 10 cm).
Corporate collection. NJ.
Rockslide I, 1984 (S-84-09)
Rockslide I was the first work in my Rockslide Series and continues my exploration of gravity, balance, and visible assembly. Two granite elements are connected by a tall, upstretched steel form, creating a precarious relationship between the grounded stone and the smaller stone held high above. Of particular importance is the connection at the base, where visible pins and a large steel wedge salvaged from a piece of heavy machinery make the means of assembly a strong visual and conceptual focus.
The exposed connection carries forward ideas from my earlier tensegrity, or Brute Series, where how a sculpture is held together was central to its meaning. Here, however, those structural concerns become part of a more expressive sense of movement suggested by the title Rockslide. The sculpture exhibited in 1984 solo show at the Diane Brown Gallery, NYC.
