January 1998. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 13.5 × 15 × 4 in (34 × 38 × 10 cm). Private Collection - Boston
Sentinel (Tool for Alberto) brings together my interest in tools, the figure, and balance. The upper element is a set of calipers—an instrument for measuring and gauging—transformed into a slender, upright figure seemingly poised on a granite cylinder. Its vertical stance suggests a sentinel standing at attention, while the tool becomes both a functional object and a metaphor for human action and ingenuity.
The sculpture’s long, attenuated form is an homage to the Italian sculptor Alberto Giacometti, whose lean, elongated figures have long interested me. Rather than depicting the human figure literally, the calipers, stone, and steel suggest its presence through proportion, posture, and precarious balance—allowing a familiar tool to take on an unexpectedly figurative character.
