July 2025. Vermont slate, pigmented and sealed steel. Dimensions: 12 x 18 x 4.5 in
Sidewinder ’25 revisits a sculptural idea I first explored more than forty years ago, bringing slate and steel together through balance, tension, and implied movement. A sweeping curved steel form reaches over a red cylindrical element to engage the irregular slate above, creating a compact composition that seems simultaneously poised and in motion. The pigmented steel introduces color as an active visual element, while the slate’s fractured surfaces provide a strong counterpoint to the more deliberate industrial forms.
Like the earlier works in my Sidewinder Series, the sculpture uses the curve to visually and physically connect otherwise disparate elements, suggesting a winding movement through the composition. Created in 2025, the work demonstrates my continuing interest in returning to earlier sculptural ideas and reinterpreting them through new combinations of material, form, and color. Sidewinder ’25 was exhibited in my 2025 exhibition at Erik Laffer Gallery and was acquired by Paul Schneider.
