1984. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 18 × 23 × 28 in (46 × 58 × 71 cm).

Sidewinder ’84, 1984

Sidewinder ’84 brings a large granite form into tension with a sweeping semicircular steel arc and an assemblage of found industrial steel. Gravity and balance remain central, but the steel has moved beyond the primarily structural role of my earlier tensegrity, or Brute Series, becoming more gestural and expressive. The visible pin wrapping the stone continues my interest in making the physical connection an active part of the sculpture.

The title Sidewinder refers to the work’s sense of coiling, curving movement, suggested most directly by the large steel arc and the angular, almost serpentine progression of forms. Like the Go-Round and Rounder works of this period, the sculpture reflects my growing interest in circular movement and found materials while retaining the physical tension between stone, steel, weight, and implied motion.
