Sidewinder II continues the circular, gestural language I was exploring during this period. A curved steel arc reaches from an angular steel base to engage a suspended granite form, creating a strong horizontal tension and sense of movement. Gravity and balance remain important, while the visible steel pin embracing the stone continues my interest in making the physical connection an integral visual and conceptual part of the sculpture.
The title Sidewinder refers to the work’s curving, almost serpentine movement, here expressed in a more compact and open composition than Sidewinder ’84. Sidewinder II was included in my 1986 solo exhibition at the Brush Art Gallery, St. Lawrence University, where it was acquired for the university’s permanent collection.
