June 1985. Granite, steel. Dimensions: 23 × 35 × 26 in (58 × 89 × 66 cm). Private Collection Washington, DC.

Sidewinder III, 1984

Sidewinder III continues my exploration of stone and steel as contrasting but interdependent elements. Two granite forms are linked by a heavy curved steel section, creating a composition that seems to twist and move laterally through space. As in the earlier Sidewinders, gravity and balance remain important, while the visible pins and steel fastenings make the physical act of joining the elements an integral part of the sculpture’s visual language.

The title Sidewinder refers to the work’s curving, sideways movement and the serpentine character suggested by the steel. Sidewinder III was included in the 1986 benefit auction for the Children’s Museum of Washington, DC, where it was purchased by Washington collector George Frampton.
