July 2009. River stone, slate, pigmented and sealed steel. Dimensions: 4 x 13 x 4 in (10 x 33 x 10 cm). Private Collection.
The Sisyphean Holiday Series draws on the Greek myth of Sisyphus, condemned to endlessly push a boulder uphill, transforming his struggle into a metaphor for the challenges and absurdities of human existence. Combining natural stone with industrial steel, the sculptures often incorporate vessel-like forms inspired by Adirondack guideboats and canoes, offering Sisyphus’s stone a symbolic ride rather than another uphill climb. The title Holiday introduces playful irony—a momentary reprieve from endless labor—while the precarious balance and implied movement suggest perseverance, uncertainty, and the importance of the journey rather than simply reaching a destination.
