My proposals centered on the importance of the Mohawk River Valley as a migration and transportation artery and included vessel-like forms, portals and gateways to convey these concepts. I focused on how Native American paths, colonial trails, and later the canal, railroads, and highways shaped the multicultural fabric of the city, Van Alstine explains.
The native Mohawk people named the river Tenonanatche, meaning "a river flowing through (or around) mountains.” It was, and continues to be, an important travel and transportation route, one of the only natural northern “flat land” passages from the Atlantic through the Appalachian ridge to lands west. Van Alstine’s proposals included vessel-like forms, portals and gateways to convey these concepts.
