April 1998. Slate, steel. Dimensions: 25 × 18 × 9 in (64 × 46 × 23 cm). Private Collection - Plattsburgh, NY.
Slate Cudgel is part of my ongoing Cudgel Series and reflects my interest in tools and implements as expressive sculptural forms. Here the curved steel suggests a handle, while the slate assumes the weight and presence of the head or blade of a primitive hand tool or weapon—a cudgel.
Although abstract, the sculpture implies human presence through the imagined act of grasping and using the tool. Slate and steel allow the work to shift between implement, implied figure, and abstract form.
