planche is a gymnastic term - a horizonal handstand
Slate Planche reflects my longstanding interest in the movement of the human figure, often explored through dance, gymnastics, and fencing. The title refers to the gymnastic planche, a horizontal handstand in which the body is suspended through strength, balance, and control.
Here the broad slate form extends outward as if suspended in space, while the curving steel supports its considerable weight. The work transforms heavy, earthbound materials into a gesture of arrested motion, using gravity, balance, and tension to suggest the poised energy of the human body.
