Slider ’97, 1997

Slider ’97 revisits ideas first explored in the Slider works of 1992 and continues my interest in tools and implements and in their “raw, efficient beauty of form dictated by function.” Here I incorporate a section of a forklift tine, retaining and celebrating its former industrial shape while combining it with granite and fabricated steel. This reflects my broader practice of bringing found objects, with their histories and associations, into new sculptural relationships.

The title Slider again refers to the fluid, sliding movement suggested by the composition. The sweeping steel elements lift and carry the granite through space, transforming heavy, workmanlike materials into a poised arrangement that suggests movement, balance, and arrested motion.
