Stone Column, 1981

Stone Column extends the structural concerns of my tensegrity, or Brute Series, into a tall, spare vertical form. A wedge-shaped piece of granite is elevated within long forged-steel bars that rise from the base and wrap around the stone. Gravity and the weight of the granite become active structural forces, creating a precarious but stable equilibrium—a static energy event held in arrested motion.

The extreme verticality gives the sculpture an almost architectural or totemic presence, while the long steel bars function as lines drawn in space. Unlike Wedge Column, where the forged bars visibly weave and interlock, Stone Column is more restrained and symmetrical, concentrating the structural action at the top where the steel grips and supports the stone. The result is a direct expression of weight, elevation, tension, and balance.
