March 1985. Granite, painted steel. Dimensions: 36 × 12 × 16 in (91 × 30 × 41 cm).

Stone Head II, 1984

Stone Head II follows Stone Head I and represents a rare exploration of the figure in my work during this time. A rough, triangular granite form is poised above a tapered steel element, creating the suggestion of a head and body without becoming literally figurative. The precarious balance and contrasting weight of stone and steel retain concerns that had long been central to my sculpture.

The work was also a momentary break from the highly self-referential sculpture I had been making—work largely concerned with material, structure, gravity, and the act of assembly itself. Here those formal concerns remain, but they are used to evoke the human figure, briefly opening the work toward a more associative and expressive direction.
